The Ambassador

H.E. Giani is a highly accomplished diplomat and security expert with a distinguished career spanning decades in international relations and public service. Born in Arezzo, Italy, on August 16, 1962, he holds dual Vatican and Italian citizenship. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Pedagogy from the university of Siena and a Master’s degree in Economic and Financial Security Sciences from the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

H.E. Giani served as the Director of Security and Civil Protection Services of Vatican City and Commander of the Corps of the Gendarmerie from 1999 to 2019. In these roles, he oversaw over 150 apostolic missions under the papacies of St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis. His responsibilities included ensuring the safety of the Holy Father, managing public safety during Vatican events, coordinating international diplomatic relations, and advancing modernizations such as joining INTERPOL, establishing cybersecurity units, and creating elite tactical teams within the Vatican security forces.

Since retiring from his Vatican roles in 2019, H.E. Giani has continued to impact global humanitarian and diplomatic efforts. He is currently the President of the Eni Foundation, leading projects that improve health, education, and living conditions in multiple countries. As the President of the Federal Association of Mercy (Misericordie), he has expanded international charitable initiatives, including emergency responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis.
H.E. Giani is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and honors from around the world, recognizing his contributions to diplomacy, humanitarian efforts, and international security.

Fluent in Italian, English, and conversational Spanish, he continues to bring a wealth of experience and leadership to his role as Ambassador, fostering dialogue and collaboration on a global scale.

He’s the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Cyprus and The Gambia.
